Mary: a stumbling block for some

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Deacon Robert Banet

To hear you Catholics talk, you’d think Mary was the fourth person of the Trinity.

Oh come on John, I thought you knew me better than that.

All those dead days you have,  all those processions, those prayers and litanies,  all those Hail Mary’s.  Jesus is the one.  Call on Him.

Yes, John, we agree on that one.  Jesus is the one.

Well, there you are!John, have you ever asked anyone to pray for you?

Of course.  Many times.

Well then, what’s wrong with asking Mary to pray for you?

She’s dead! The Bible says we’re not to conjure up spirits.

Dead! Jesus says He is the God of the living. Don’t you remember He spoke to Moses and Elijah on the Mount of the Transfiguration? Was He talking to the dead?

Well… er.

And when talking to the Saducees, He said He was the God of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and that He was the not the God of the dead but of the living.

Where does it say that?

Look at  Matthew 22.

I’ll check that out.

And as to praising the Blessed Mother, the  Bible says all generations will praise her.

Oh, I forgot.

And don’t forget how it was she who got Jesus to work His first miracle.  Cana.  Remember that?

Yeah, but that’s past history.

True, but it’s also present history.  Mary is alive.  She’s with Jesus and can intercede for us.

Well,  maybe you Catholics are on to something. I’ll have to talk to my pastor about this.
