Gospel: John 6:51-58 “I am the living bread which came down from heaven.”

Full homily text: Summer is a time for many things: family, fun, relaxation etc…. For us religious and priests it is often a time to make a home visit and see our families. It is always amazing to me to see my six nephews; how they have grown and what they are doing. Several are beginning new stages of their life. One is moving on to Kindergarten. Another is moving from elementary school to middle school. Both of these stages are big. Kindergarten means being gone from home for the whole day. Middle school means transitioning out of childhood into more serious academics and social interaction.

My sisters are both anxious about how their children will handle these new steps. Will they adjust to the new demands? Will they make friends? Growing up is truly a journey. As an uncle I get to observe and marvel at how their lives change. But parents feel keenly the daily struggles and dangers that are present in the journey. Innately they wish that they could be present at each moment of their child’s life to protect and give them all the support that they need.  To surround them with their love and to strengthen them for the journey. Fr. Anthony Brankin

Our children today look beautiful in their dresses and suits. But more beautiful are their hearts and souls. You have nothing but goodness and purity as you wait for Jesus to come inside. When you drink a glass of milk, all the calcium and vitamins go into your bones to make you beautiful, boys and girls. Your parents want the best for you. They also want your souls to be happy. Jesus is the food for souls — to be happy and good and holy. We are what we eat. Continue Reading…

Gospel: Luke 24:13-35 He became known to them in the breaking of the bread

(Sorry, no audio)

Full  homily text: In today’s Gospel we have the spiritual image of walking along “the Way.” We travel on many journeys during our life. We go from dependant infants to children experiencing the world. Then, we go from adolescence to young adults. The journeys go on throughout our life, until we go on the ultimate journey that leads from this life to the next. At each stage, there is a danger of being lost. Of losing our bearings along “the Way.” We need guides. We need figures to walk with us. Parents, relatives, and friends often act as these guides.  They walk with us on “the Way” helping us to understand what life is all about and how to make it through safely.

But, it is Jesus who is the hidden guide that instructs us through the Scriptures and tradition of the Church. But he is not just present with us in an obscure way; the Risen Lord walks with us tangibly. His Holy Spirit dwells within us at Baptism and is strengthened within us through the gifts at Confirmation.

Gospel: Luke 24:13-35 They recognized Him in the breaking of the bread.

Homily summary: The Gospel is about the disciples who were met by Jesus on the road to Emmaus. They recognized Him in the breaking of the bread, which we know to be the Holy Mass. After the Resurrection Peter, who had denied Christ, was able to perform miracles.

The real presence of Christ in the Eucharist — more than a symbol

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

Fr. John Granato, S.M.
Gospel: Luke 1:39-56 “Blessed is the fruit of your womb.”
Audio MP3
10 min.

Summary: (This homily was taken from a previous year.) A child is a reminder of one’s spouse, and the love that exists between the spouses. The Eucharist is not a symbol. Jesus really meant it when He said “Eat my body, drink my blood.” The original Greek says to gnaw and chew on the body. Jesus says, “I am here to transform you so you won’t be attached to a life of sin.”
