Gospel: Matt. 4:1-11 The three temptations of Jesus
Fr. Pablo Straub
Mp3 Audio
Summary: The devil tempted Jesus in three ways at the end of his 40-day fast. Yet, Jesus did not feel the least inclination to do what the devil wanted. Only two people were conceived immaculately — the Blessed Virgin Mary and Jesus.
We have concupiscence as a result of original sin. We are drawn to evil like a magnet. Even when we are not interested in it, we are drawn to it. If original sin is taken away by Baptism, why do we have concupiscence? Sin has left its footprints in the human psyche, like footprints in wet concrete.
Saint Francis de Sales’ “little virtues” of gentleness, kindness, humility, and cheerful optimism shape the monastic life of the Visitation Sisters. Consider a life of prayer and teaching. Washington, DC.
The first temptation of Jesus was to turn stones into bread. This temptation is for us to use our God-given power for our own bad sake. In response to the second temptation, Jesus said, “you shall not tempt the Lord your God.” The devil here is saying to us, God takes care of his own. Do what you want and God will take care of you.
The third temptation was when the devil took Jesus on a high mountain. “These kingdoms are all mine.” The devil would give him the kingdoms if He fell down and worshiped him. Adoring the devil goes along with the culture of death. But Jesus said, “The Lord is God, Him alone shall you adore.”
