27th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Oct. 2, 2011
Fr. Anthony Brankin
Gospel: Matt. 21:33-43 “The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.”
Homily summary: Today, Oct. 2, is the Feast of the Guardian Angels. We believe that at the beginning of our lives, God assigns to us a guardian angel to protect us, inspire us, warn us, and thus to help us get to heaven.
Walk on the spiritual path along with St. Francis de Sales and St. Jane de Chantal into the Love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Are you a lay person interested in plunging more fully into a way of daily devotion? Or considering a vocation to the monastic Visitandine tradition? Go to Visitation Spirit website.
An angel is a being, an entity, a person whom we cannot see, but who loves us and wants us to get to heaven. They don’t have bodies. A guardian angel guards us by a subtle breathing into our hearts. It may be about a course of action that is better for us, or a person who is better for us.
We will meet our guardian angel
At the end of our lives, we will meet our guardian angel. We will ask him how did God help me all throughout the years? He will say, “You chose to respond in a certain way, and things turned out happy for us. That was me, your guardian angel.”
Our visible parents are the closest things we have to our guardian angel. They protect us, and guard us. They will even give up their lives to protect us. Our parents want us to be full of life and love. We must be guarded from the kid who doesn’t smile, who is from a broken home where there is crying and beating.
The devil’s false happiness
The devil wants to ensnare you. He tells you, it’s money and pleasure that will make you happy. It’s boys, girls, styles, tattoos, etc. He feeds us these lies all day long. But these things won’t make us happy.
God tells us, through the Church, that life is not about taking, but about giving. The Evil One wants only death for us. God wants life for us. That’s why He sends us our guardian angel.
