32nd Week in Ordinary Time, 2012
Deacon Robert Banet
Did you have your grapefruit this morning?
My what?
Your grapefruit. Dr Pauling says it’s very good for you health.
Who is he?
He is a Nobelist twice over and was working on this third. A great scientist.
Tell me more and tell me what that has to do with anything.
He worked like a slave all day long and all his life long.
So?
Eat grapefruit
He gave lectures. He taught at Cal Tech for years. He researched, researched, researched. He traveled over the world to spread his message. “Eat grapefruit, especially the white part next to the rind.”
Again, so what?
So he put his heart and soul and all his energies into his scientific work. He was a zealot for science.
What are you getting at?
The Bible says, Love the Lord God with your whole heart, your whole mind and all your strength. Dr Pauling gives us an idea of what that means.
The way Linus loved science
You mean to say we should love God the way Linus loved his science?
Exactly. You catch on quick. If we would love God with as much fervor as he did his idol, we would be living up to what Jesus said we should be doing.
Easier said than done. But you’ve set me thinking. They say love is an act of the will, not a feeling.
So what’s stopping you from making that act and then acting on it?
