Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, Sun., Jan. 19, 2013
Deacon Robert Banet
My cousin Amy says she can’t love God.
Ah. Why does she say that? The Bible says we must love God.
She says it’s too hard. She prefers just to like Him.
Like Him! Why does she say loving Him is hard?
She says the priest told her she must love God with a sacrificial love.
Sacrificial? What does that mean?
The priest said we must love God for His own sake and be ready to make sacrifices for Him. Not just for what He can do for us.
Go on.
Like the husband’s love for his wife. St. Paul says the husband must be ready to lay down his life for her.
I remember now. The husband is supposed to be like Jesus in His love for the Church. He died for the Church.
Yes. I remember a movie with Bette Davis where she took a job scrubbing floors and cleaning toilets so her son could go to college.
Yes. I remember. That’s true love. Sacrificial love. Amy says that’s not for her. But that’s what God asks. It’s too hard for her.
Me too. Amy gives me something to think about.
