The saints saw their unworthiness — and were humbled

July 1, 2013. Bl. Junipero Serra

I like what Cardinal Newman says about being unworthy.

You mean Blessed  John Newman?

Oh yes. I forgot that he is now a Blessed. Anyway what he said was, Lord I am not worthy but only You know just how unworthy I am.

Wow! That’s really something.  What humility.

Yes, humility – but it’s just the truth.

How do you figure that?

A number of saints were shown just what they looked like from God’s point of view. St. John Vianney, for one.

And what they did look like?

St. John couldn’t stand it. He asked God not let him see the picture any longer. It was too upsetting.

A saint said that?

Yes.  And a very holy nun Sister Crucifixa, said she was shown what looked like a murky swamp with ugly animals  slinking about.  She asked God what the vision meant.

And what did God say?

He said that was a picture of her soul.

That’s really something.  You know, I think I’m a pretty good guy.  But maybe I should start re-thinking that. Maybe the saints have something to tell me.

Good idea.  “Lord, I am not worthy and only You know just how unworthy I am.
