Feast of St. Bernard
Deacon Robert Banet
I wrote to the Pope about my brother.
Oh?
Yes. Luigi was killed and I was heartbroken.
I can imagine. What did you do?
I wrote to the Pope and asked for his prayers.
And?
What you know! I got a phone call from him!
You didn’t!
Yes. I was delighted. He was very kind and spoke to me in a very comforting way. I was really very moved.
I can imagine. I don’t want to take away from you being honored but you know: something even greater happened to me.
Oh?
Yes. God Himself called me and spoke to me.
You don’t mean it!
Yes. You know the Bible is the word of God. We say that at every Mass at the end of a reading: The word of the Lord.
Yes. That’s true.
Well, one day, God told me, “I have loved you with an everlasting love.” I was reading the prophet Jeremiah.
I recall that now.
Well, God tells each and every one of us the same thing: I have loved you with an everlasting love.
That’s hard to take it.
Yes. But it’s true. We need to listen to God speaking to us through the Bible. Praise God.
