Feast of Cosmas and Damien, Thurs., Sept. 26, 2013
Deacon Robert Banet
Yo, Charlie! How was your camping trip?
Great. We camped along Lake Michigan We got up at sunrise and you’ll never believe what I saw.
OK. I’ll bite. What did you see?
I saw the sun making a pathway directly to me across the water.
Wow! Well, that is something.
Then I got to wondering, what if I were ten miles up the shore, would the golden pathway meet me there? And I had to say yes. And what if a hundred miles? Again yes. And so on.
Yes, I believe you are right.
Then I got to wondering, maybe God is that way too. I mean He is making a pathway to me.
Yes, I think you’re on to something there. It looks like He is making that golden pathway just to you.
Yes. But you know that He is also doing the same to everyone who looks at Him, just as the sun looks like it’s making that pathway only to you.
That’s what so puzzling about it. It looks like it’s coming just to you and nobody else. And yet you know what is happening to another camper up the lakeshore.
The thing is, how does He do that? I mean. Make everyone think that he is the only one who has His attention.
Beats me. But I do believe it’s true. Just as the sun makes that golden river to you and you cannot see any other river there, so it is with God: you are talking to Him and are unaware of anyone else being there. You have Him all to yourself.
Do you think He planned it that way? I mean, the sun and the laws of optics and all that?
I do indeed. I think He planted all those laws of nature to act as a guide to help us get a hold of who He is.
And He gave me the gift of faith so that I could believe in His great power and care for us.
Amen to that!
