Feast of St. Teresa of Jesus, Oct. 15, 2013
Deacon Robert Banet
What’s the matter, Charlie? You’re all upset.
What’s the matter? I’ll tell you, cousin. The Pope has done it again.
What do you mean? Are you talking about one of those interviews?
Yes. This time he told that atheist professor that God is not Catholic. Can you believe it? That’s an article of faith!
Wait a minute. Charlie. I don’t think it’s a matter of faith. Let’s look at it calmly.
I’m ready to leave the Church. But go ahead. See if you can make some sense of this.
Well, for one thing God is outside time and the Church is in time.
What’s that got to do with it?
Well, the Church had a beginning. And God did not have a beginning.
You’re beginning to make some sense. Go on.
From the very beginning (but there’s really no beginning with God) God is or was, what He is now. There is no change in God. He could not start to be something that He was not before. Something that is added.
So you’re saying that since He existed before the Church came along and that God cannot change, He never was Catholic?
That’s right, Charlie.
Hmm. Well, I believe you’ve got something there.
I hope you’re rethinking that idea of yours of leaving the Church.
Well, the way you put it, yes.
Good thinking, cousin. You know, there’s never a good reason for leaving the Church. Never.
