C’mon, sport! Let’s re-capture Sunday

32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Nov. 10, 2013
Deacon Robert Banet

Did you hear about that bishop in the South?

No. What is this? Another church scandal?

No.  Or not exactly.  Maybe in a way it is  a scandal.

Tell me more.

Well, he urged his pastors not to schedule any sports events on  Sunday!

What? Is he crazy! What’s that got to do with religion?

Everything.  He’s noticed that young people are often absent from Sunday Mass.  It was because of sports events on Sunday.

Maybe he’s right.

He said that Sunday is for Church and for family.  People should make time for Mass and for getting together with the family.

For prayer?

Could be that.  But also for family fun.  Games.  Little side trips.  Just getting together.

That could be a good idea.  No enough of that these days.

He said families need to be built.  A family is not just a biological unit.  It’s something that needs to be nurtured and fed and practiced.

You know, I’m beginning to agree with him.  God said the Lord’s day was meant for man.  It was to be a day of worship and a day of rest.

Rest.  Ah, I like that part.

God knows what’s good for man.

Amen to that, brother.
