Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe
Thus., Dec. 12, 2013
Deacon Robert Banet
My cousin Charlie has stopped saying the Litany of the Blessed Mother. Or rather, he has edited it.
What do you mean, edited it?
He takes out the invocation, Mother of our Creator.
Why would he do that?
He says it makes Mary greater than the Creator.
I’ll have to admit it’s a problem. Does he think it means that Mary created God?
That’s what it looks like to him. Let’s take a look at what it seemed to Elizabeth.
Elizabeth who? Elizabeth Taylor?
Very funny. You know who I mean. St. Elizabeth, the relative of the Blessed Mother.
Go on, o wise one.
When Mary visited Elizabeth, what did Elizabeth say?
Let’s see if I remember. O, I remember. She said, How is it that the mother of my Lord comes to me?
Exactly, and who is “my Lord”?
It has to be God Almighty. There could be no other Lord.
Maybe Elizabeth was mistaken.
The Bible says she when she heard Mary’s greeting, “she was filled with the Holy Spirit.”
Where does it say that?
You could look it up. It’s in the first chapter of the Gospel of Luke.
I might just do that.
It’s there all right. So if Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, calls Mary the mother of the Creator, how can we not say the same thing?
I guess you’re right. But I’m still going to look it up.
Be my guest. Keep me honest. Glory to God!
