Deacon Robert Banet
You know Aunt Clara? She’ Charlie’s aunt.
I seem to remember. So what’s this about what she gave for Christmas?
Well, she gave her granddaughter a talking doll.
A what?
You know, a doll with a string that you pull.
And then?
And then a record inside the doll speaks to you.
And what does the doll say?
“I love you, mama.” How about that?
Pretty neat, I’d say. Hey, that gives me an idea.
Speak, O wise one.
Why didn’t God make a talking doll out of us?
What do you mean?
Well, He could have put a switch on our heart that said I love you.
Maybe you’re on to something. But wait a minute. That wouldn’t work.
Why?
God does not want robots. He does not want machines. He was a something that knows and wills. One that is not forced or works automatically.
Hmm. That’s something to think about.
Look at the wind and the water and the seeds that sprout, they do His will but they do it mindlessly. They don’t do it out of love. They do not consciously praise Him. They praise Him but only because of a doll’s string, as it were.
I see what you mean. God wants love and obedience freely and knowingly given.
I have to think about that the next time I pray.
Why not right now? Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost.
Amen to that!
