Deacon Robert Banet
What’s wrong, aunt Clara? You look like you’ve lost your best friend.
Oh, I was just thinking. I’m wondering — why I am still here?
Why, you know why you’re here. You learned that in catechism class. We’re here to love God and serve him and be happy with him forever.
Oh, I know that. I mean why am I still here? After Joe died and we raised the family, I wonder what I am still here for. I’ve done my job and, well, I’m just wondering.
I don’t know if I can help you but I have a few thoughts.
I’d be glad to hear what you have to say.
Well, your big job, your major vocation, we could say, is finished. But God has other things for you to do. The psalm says God knows our every movement. He knows our every thought; He knows when I sit and when I get up.
All right, but how does that affect me?
He knows that the person who lives next door to you needs a word of encouragement. Go talk to that person. That’s your little vocation for today. And tomorrow there may be another job for you to do. There are many ways to do what God has planned for you.
You may have something there. My major job is finished; now I need to listen for clues to do my minor jobs.
God knows right now what we are thinking and is planting thoughts in our heads.
You know, I just thought of something.
What?
That clerk at Walgreen’s was really helpful to me yesterday. She helped me get the right battery for my hearing aid. I think I will write a note to the manager and tell him how much I appreciated that.
There you go! Now you know why God is keeping you here
