Wednesday of the Second Week in Ordinary Time
Deacon Robert Banet
I’ve been reading about St. Raymond of Penyafort.
Oh? never head of him.
He was a tenth century priest. Very learned. He writes this prayer: “May you never be numbered among those whose house is peaceful, quiet and free from care.”
You call that a prayer?
He goes on: “Those on whom the Lord’s chastisement does not descend; those who live out their days in prosperity, and in the twinkling of an eye will go down to hell.”
What!
That’s what he says. And it’s included in the prayer of the Church.
I don’t believe it.
You could look it up. It’s no new message. You find in the Bible that we must undergo many trials to enter the kingdom.
Where does it say that?
In the Acts of the Apostles. And besides, Jesus Himself said, “Take up you cross daily and follow Me.”
That’s more than I want to hear.
That’s the message I have to deliver to you, Charlie.
I prefer the sweet Jesus, the comfortable Jesus, the undemanding Jesus. He’s more to my liking.
Think of the cross. Think of what He went through, willingly, for love of you.
I’ll have to think about it.
Don’t take too long.
