Tuesday, the Third Week of Easter
Deacon Robert Banet
Yo, Charlie, where’ve you been?
I went to a wake last night and it was a blast.
Oh, they had cameras there and piles of memorabilia.
Memorabilia?
Yes. Token’s from my friend’s life. And a video of his life story.
I suppose they prayed for your friend.
Maybe. I was so caught up in what the string of speakers were saying about Ray that I didn’t notice.
String?
Yes. There were about five or six of them, and then I had to scout around to find envelopes for my Mass offerings.
I don’t know, Charlie. Sounds like the spirit of the world has invaded that wake.
What do you mean?
Well, it’s the this-world aspect of it. Little is said of praying for the dead, or of Purgatory. It’s all focused on life on this side of the grave and not on the eternal.
Maybe you’re right. Maybe a wake is a good time to think about our own deaths.
Amen to that.
Requiescat in pace.
