28th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Deacon Robert Banet
You Catholics!
What is it this time, Richard?
You Catholics are always changing and adding things.
What do you mean?
I mean all those Marian doctrines. There’s nothing like that in the Bible.
That’s true, Rich. But I found something that helped me figure that out.
Oh? Go on.
Well, its like looking at the stars. Years ago, before telescopes, people could of course see stars.
Yes. Go on.
And then after telescopes came on the scene, they saw more stars.
So?
So were these stars new stars or did they exist before?
Why, they were always there. You think I don’t know my astronomy!
O. K. Then along came Mr. Hubble and still more stars.
What are you getting at?
Just as those stars were there before, but were unseen, so too with things like the Immaculate Conception.
I don’t follow you.
The Immaculate Conception was a fact at the time of her conception. It simply was not known. Same with the Assumption. It was a historical fact but it was not known, or at least not accepted as dogma. As time went on, our “telescopes” became sharper and we can now see the things that were there all along but not clearly known.
Well, Charlie, you may have something there. I’ll have to think about it.
