32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Deacon Robert Banet
It was Good Friday and he was to be received into the Church the next day.
What happened?
He could not go on. He was a topnotch religion reporter for the Los Angeles Times.
What’s that got to do with it?
He had been investigating the clergy scandals.
Oh, I see. That’s what turned him against the Church.
No. He weathered that storm all right.
But…
But way the Church leader reacted was what got him.
Oh?
Yes, the evasions and denials and hush money and downright lies — that’ what proved the stumbling block. To think that a loving God would permit that ongoing pain and suffering with the knowledge of the Church…. He lost faith in God.
You know, Jesus said there would be stumbling blocks.
Yes, He called them scandals.
Well, our faith is not in individuals, but in Christ Jesus.
Check! He said he would be with us to the end.
I’m so happy that God brought me into the Church.
Me too. But I feel so sad about Billy.
We can pray for him.
Amen.
