A new year brings with it hope and expectations for the future. Let me tell you a most hopeful story. It starts at St. Odilo Church in the Chicago area.
It’s unusual in a Catholic church for the congregation to applaud.
Especially when the pastor asks for money.
But clap they did at St. Odilo church in the Chicago area recently. The pastor, Fr. Anthony Brankin, gave his annual appeal for donations to parishioners. But the point of his talk was more than just the various projects that the parish has undertaken. Projects such as fixing the leaky church roof, shoring up the mortar in the school building, and repairing the ailing gutters around the parish buildings.
He was really talking about something else.
He was talking about souls.
He explained,
“None of this means anything—of course—unless it is helping the spiritual lives of our parishioners.”
And the parishioners sensed that. That’s why they clapped. And they respond well to his yearly appeal for donations.
I want you to do the same. Why?
Good things are happening at St. Odilo, and it has a ripple effect that helps you, where ever you are. On any given week, almost twenty-eight hundred people come to Sunday Masses. The school and the CCD (religious instruction) is growing. Saint Odilo is providing for the Catholic education of a total of almost 750 children and young adults in the Berwyn area. That’s impressive.
