What’s that “new” Benedictine hymn?

3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Deacon Robert Banet

Caeli Pandis Ostium

I’ve been reviewing one of the Benediction hymns.

Benediction? What’s that? Some new devotion?

Yea, it’s all right! It’s only been around for a thousand years.

No need to be sarcastic. I was just asking.

Maybe I was a little short with you. Anyway, the hymn talks about Jesus opening the gate of heaven.

Opening? Wasn’t the gate always open to those who were good?

The gate was closed after Adam’s fall, closed no matter how good you were.

Oh. Then you say Jesus opened it?

Yes, by dying on the cross. His death – His blood is our salvation.

Well, then we should be very grateful to Him.

Yes. And one of the ways is that “new” devotion: Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

I’ll have to look into that.
