11th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Deacon Robert Banet
Charlie, you remember the reporter who almost joined the Church?
Yes, it was Good Friday and he was to be baptized the next day.
Yes. He then ran across the case where Church authorities defended the scandalous wrongdoing of certain priests.
And he refused baptism!
That was an understandable judgment but it was wrong.
How do you figure that?
Well you should judge an institution by its successes, not by its failures.
What do you mean?
An institution like the Church is good or bad if its heroes live up to the goals that the institution proclaims.
You mean the saints?
Exactly. They show the validity of the institution, that is, the Church.
I see. And if you judge the Church by its failures, you come up with a different answer.
That poor reporter. How close he came.
Yes, but he made a wrong judgment.
