14th Tuesday in Ordinary Time
Deacon Robert Banet
Well, Oscar, what did your minister say when you told him about the Bible calling Mary the Mother of God?
He said he’d have to think about it.
Tell him there’s more for him to think about.
Oh?
Tell him about Mary’ assumption.
Her assumption? Don’ tell me that’s in the Bible.
No, but there a precedent.
Go on.
Well, you remember Elijah. He went up to heaven in a fiery chariot.
Yes, I remember. In the book of Kings.
Yes, the second book of Kings. And then there’s Enoch.
Who?
Enoch. The Bible says God took him and he was seen no more.
Where does it say that?
Book of Genesis. He was the father of Methuselah.
Oh.
There’s more.
Oh no!
Who in the Bible came into being without sin?
Nobody. We are all sinners.
How about Adam? He came into being sinless from the hand of God.
Oh, I never thought of that.
His sinlessness was a foreshadowing of Mary’s immaculate conception. I know it’s not exactly the same but it shows God does make exceptions sometimes.
I never thought of that. That’s really something.
That’ll give your pastor something more to think about.
You’ve got me thinking. Where could I learn more about the Catholic Church?
The best book on that subject is the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
Where could I find that?
I’d be glad to lend you mine!
