Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Deacon Robert Banet
Why do you keep harping on hell? It’s so depressing.
Why? Because nobody else talks about it.
Well, thank God for that. It’s too depressing to think that a loving God would punish His creatures with never-ending pain.
St. Faustina visited hell and describes its torments: the loss of God, the perpetual remorse of conscience, the knowledge that this will never change….
Maybe St. Faustina just had a terrible nightmare.
Or maybe you’re the one who’s dreaming.
Well, go on.
There’s a fire that penetrates the soul without destroying it. And then there’s the constant company of Satan, hatred of God, special tortures designed for particular souls. You do well to listen to her, Oscar.
It’s too horrible.
It’s horrible, all right. But there’s nothing in her description that contradicts Church teaching.
I think I’d rather listen to Fr. X. He always preaches about pleasant things. I still can’t believe a loving God would act that way.
Go to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Oscar. You’ll find the truth there.
