Feast of the Baptism of the Lord
Deacon Robert Banet
Yo Ozzie, I thought you were interested in the lives of the saints and the things of God. So what’s that in you hand? Surely not the Farmer’s Almanac?
Indeed it is the Farmer’s Almanac, and indeed it is concerned with the things of God.
How do you figure that?
It tracks the comings and goings of the seasons, the tilt of the earth the shortening and lengthening if the days.
Hey wait a minute! You’re talking astronomy, not theology!
You’re right of course. But the planets and the sun—they were created by God and they obey His laws.
I’m beginning to see.
Like today, the Almanac tells me when the sun rises and later on it will show me an earlier time for sunrise. The planet is tilting in its journey to midsummer when it will tilt back the other way. The planet is obeying the rule that God ordained.
I see! That’s wonderful. That’s what the Psalmist means when he talks about the heavens declaring the glory of God.
Right! And it not just the earth but the other planets and the sun and the stars. They all obediently follow the laws of God.
Ah. Would that we were that obedient.
Amen to that! Glory to God!
