“One thing I cannot believe”

Fourth Sunday of Advent, Dec. 23, 2012
Deacon Robert Banet

I can’t believe it!

What can’t you believe?

Well, first of all, I can believe in the Holy Trinity. I can believe in the Virgin Birth and the Incarnation. But there is one thing I cannot believe!

What one thing can’t  you believe, Charlie?

I can’t believe that the Creator of the universere  would want to spend time with me.

Yes, that would be hard to believe.  Where did you get that idea?

Well, it says in the Bible.

Where?

In the book of Revelation.  You could look it up. It’s where Jesus says He’s knocking at my door.

Oh yes, now I remember. He says He wants to come in and have supper with you.  So I guess that means more that just eating.  It means talking with Him.

You remember that holy picture?  The one with Jesus knocking at the door?

Yes, there’s no handle on the door.  It has to be opened from the inside.  From my side.

Do you think that that applies to me?

Yes I do, Charlie.  I believe He wants to come in to spend some time with you.  He wants to have you talk to Him, to tell Him your troubles, to tell Him how you want to be with Him.  And remember when we read the Bible in church, what do we say?

We say,  “The word of the Lord.”  I guess that means, “This is God talking to you.”

Yes, and the accent is on the you.

Well, when you put it that way, I can begin to believe it after all.  Imagine that: the Lord of the whole world wanting to spend time with me.
